What is the SEDC:

The SEDC is dedicated to making the demand side a smart, interactive part of the energy value chain in order to ensure the long-term goals of the Smart Grid

The SEDC is an industry group, which represents the requirements of programs involving smart energy demand in order to further the development of the Smart Grid and ensure improved end-consumer benefits.

The SEDC Vision is to promote the active participation by the demand side in European electricity markets – ensure consumer benefits, increase security of supply and reduce carbon emissions.

The SEDC focus is to promote Demand Side programs such as, peak clipping and shifting, energy usage feedback and information, smart home, in-home and in-building automation, electric vehicle charging management, and other programs related to making demand a smart, interactive part of the energy value.

The SEDC supports the 2020 objectives: The Smart Grid is widely seen in Europe as a means to reach its 2020 objectives:  20% lowered energy consumption, 20% lowered CO₂ emissions and 20% use of renewable energy resources.  Demand centered programs, dedicated to balancing consumption with generation could be said to form the heart of the intelligence of this Smart Grid.

To a certain extent the realization of the “smart” grid is dependent on the ability of utilities to make energy demand “smart”, using such tools as feedback, pricing and automation. Yet despite their central position within a new Smart Grid future – European demand centered programs are lagging well behind other global markets.  If this trend continues it could potentially slow the deployment of Smart Grid technology and threaten long-term goals.

The SEDC aims to become an industry group, which can represent the requirements of programs involving smart energy demand, related to making demand a smart, interactive part of the energy value chain – thus furthering the development of the Smart Grid.

Demand Side participation is essential to:

• achieving renewable energy integration,
• meeting CO2 targets,
• increasing energy efficiency,
• supporting electric vehicles,
• realizing the benefits of the smart grid,
• optimizing the use of distribution and transmission grid capacity,
• contributing to the innovation economy, and
• creating cleantech jobs

The SEDC promotes cost-efficiency in all the above-mentioned issues.

Coordinate 2010 was not like any ordinary smart grids event, it was a highly interactive event where participants got to meet and discuss with everyone in a structured and informal manner. High level and highly respected experts and practitioners from over 15 countries participated in a mixture of concise presentations and round-table discussions, a great atmosphere and a chance to solve issues together.

Utilities, authorities, researchers and vendors from the USA, Europe, Canada and Japan gathered in Copenhagen between 26th-27th May for the 2nd Global Demand Response Round-Table Event, EXCHANGE 2010. Focusing on topics ranging from business cases to visions, from in home solutions to smart city integration, this event presented the absolute state of the art from around the world.

The brand new Respond 2010 report was also introduced at Exchange 2010.

AUSTRALIAN PRIME MINISTER APPOINTS ENERGY EFFICIENCY ADVISORY GROUP

Nine industry and non-government sector experts have today been announced as advisers to the Prime Minister’s Task Group on Energy Efficiency.

Energy efficiency is a key plank of the Rudd Government’s climate change agenda. Improvements in energy efficiency will help to reduce our emissions and move Australia to a low-carbon economy.

The Task Group comprises representatives from the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, the Treasury, and the Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism.

The role of the Task Group is to:

• report on the most economically and environmentally effective mechanisms to deliver major improvements in Australia’s energy efficiency; and
• consult with industry and community groups and seek their input on policy ideas and mechanisms to drive these changes.

The Task Group is today releasing an Issues Paper that will promote a broad discussion on how to achieve ambitious improvements in energy efficiency.

The closing date for submissions to this Issues Paper is 3 May 2010.

The Task Group – announced in November 2009 following extensive negotiations with the Opposition on the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme – will provide its findings to Government in mid-2010.

Workshop on Demand Response in Europe: Status, Barriers, Opportunities and Outlooks

HOSTED BY: Organised by the European Commission Joint Research Centre, Institute for Energy in collaboration with VaasaETT Global Energy Think Tank.

DESCRIPTION: This two day interactive workshop will present the potential for commercial demand response contributions to grid security and the optimisation of renewable energies, as well as the reduction of overall systems costs and environmental impact. The present status of demand response in Europe will be reviewed, as well existing technical and regulatory barriers, and the needed policies and incentives to foster effective commercial demand response. The workshop will include presentations from market experts as well as interactive discussion sessions, in order to allow for the free exchange of ideas and to encourage the development of problem solving solutions.

The workshop aims to attract key representatives from utilities, regulatory authorities, policy makers, researchers, and technology suppliers. Representative will be attending both from within Europe and the USA.
